How we use cookies and similar technologies
Last Updated: 20 April 2026
Cookies are small text files stored on your device (computer, tablet, smartphone) when you visit a website. They help websites remember your preferences, authenticate you, and understand how you use the site.
Similar Technologies: We also use local storage, session storage, and other browser storage technologies that function like cookies.
| Category | Purpose | Examples | Duration | Consent? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Strictly Necessary | Essential for site functionality, authentication, security | Session cookies, CSRF tokens, load balancing | Session / 7 days | Not required |
| Functional | Remember preferences (language, theme) | Theme preference, saved searches | 30 days - 1 year | Recommended |
| Analytics | Understand how the site is used to improve our services | Google Analytics 4, Microsoft Clarity | 13 months | Required |
| Marketing | Measure ad campaigns, enable cross-device insights and show relevant ads (remarketing) | Google Ads, Google Signals, Meta Pixel | Up to 13 months (varies by provider) | Required |
3.1 Strictly Necessary Cookies (No Consent Required)
| Cookie Name | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| connect.sid | Session authentication (httpOnly, secure) | Session |
| trovara_language (local storage) | Remembers your chosen interface language | Until you clear it |
| trovara_cookie_consent / trovara_cookie_preferences (local storage) | Records that you answered the cookie banner and which categories you allowed | 12 months |
3.2 Functional Cookies (Recommended)
| Cookie Name | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| trovara-theme | Remember light/dark theme preference | 1 year |
| saved_search_prefs | Store search preferences locally | 30 days |
3.3 Analytics Cookies (Opt-In Required)
We use analytics tools to understand how visitors use the site. These cookies are only set after you give explicit consent via the cookie banner. You can withdraw consent at any time in your account preferences.
| Tool | Provider | Purpose | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Analytics 4 (G-18HC6GC12C) | Google LLC, USA | Page views, session duration, user interactions — used to improve the service | 13 months |
| Microsoft Clarity (w9y2v0g1z0) | Microsoft Corporation, USA | Session recordings (clicks, scrolls) — used to diagnose UX issues | 13 months |
These tools transfer data to the United States under the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the EU–US Data Privacy Framework (Google and Microsoft are certified). See their privacy policies in Section 4.
3.4 Advertising & Remarketing Cookies (Opt-In Required)
With your Marketing consent, we use advertising services to measure our campaigns and show relevant ads. These are only set after you opt in via the cookie banner — never for visitors who decline or are not signed in.
| Tool | Provider | Purpose | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Ads | Google Ireland Ltd / Google LLC, USA | Measure ad conversions and show remarketing ads to past visitors | Up to 13 months |
| Google Signals | Google Ireland Ltd / Google LLC, USA | Cross-device measurement and remarketing for signed-in Google users who enabled Ads Personalization — associates activity with their Google Account (not anonymous) | Per Google account settings |
| Meta Pixel | Meta Platforms Ireland Ltd | Measure ad performance and show remarketing ads on Facebook / Instagram | Up to 13 months |
Google Signals links session data to signed-in Google users across devices where you have consented — this data is not anonymous. You can review or delete it via Google 'My Activity' and Google Ads Settings, and manage your Meta ad preferences in your Meta account. All of this runs only with your Marketing consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
Some services are loaded by your browser, or receive data from our servers. This table lists each one, what it does, and where to find its privacy policy:
| Service | Purpose | Privacy Policy |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe | Payment processing, fraud detection | stripe.com/privacy |
| Google Sign-In | Optional authentication when you choose “Sign in with Google” | policies.google.com/privacy |
| Google Analytics 4 | Analytics — only loaded with your consent | policies.google.com/privacy |
| Google Ads | Ad conversion tracking & remarketing — only loaded with your consent | policies.google.com/privacy |
| Google Maps Platform | Interactive maps, Street View and location lookups embedded in reports | policies.google.com/privacy |
| Microsoft Clarity | Session recording — only loaded with your consent | clarity.microsoft.com/privacy |
| Meta Pixel | Advertising measurement & remarketing — only loaded with your consent | facebook.com/privacy/policy |
| Meta Conversions API | Purchase events sent from our servers rather than your browser: your hashed email address, hashed user ID, IP address and browser user agent — only with your marketing consent | facebook.com/privacy/policy |
| Sanity CDN | Delivers Magazine article images; receives your IP address. Sets no cookie. | sanity.io/legal/privacy |
| Cloudflare CDN | Delivers map marker graphics; receives your IP address. Sets no cookie. | cloudflare.com/privacypolicy |
| OpenStreetMap | Delivers map tiles; receives your IP address. Sets no cookie. | osmfoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy |
The last three entries set no cookies, but your browser must connect to them to load images, map tiles and interface graphics — which discloses your IP address to them. Web fonts are the exception: we host them ourselves, so no request goes to Google Fonts. Our AI providers and email tools do not run in your browser and set no cookies; they are listed in section 4 of our Privacy Policy.
5.1 Cookie Preferences (Our Platform)
You can manage your cookie preferences in your Account Settings. Note: Disabling strictly necessary cookies will prevent you from using core features (login, reports). Cookie Preferences.
5.2 Browser Settings
All browsers allow you to control cookies. Here's how:
- Chrome: Cookie settings
- Firefox: Cookie settings
- Safari: Cookie settings
- Edge: Cookie settings
5.3 Do Not Track (DNT)
We currently do not respond to Do Not Track signals, as there is no industry standard for handling them. We respect browser cookie settings and explicit opt-outs.
We may update this Cookie Policy to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. We will notify you of material changes via email and/or a prominent notice on our website.
